The Central New England Brittany Club originated in
1948 and became the second oldest Brittany Club in America. The club was formed because of the keen interest
in what was then known as the Brittany Spaniel (formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1934) a pointing and retrieving
dog. The American Brittany Club was given final recognition by the AKC on July 14, 1944, coinciding with
Bastille Day, appropriate for a dog of French origins. The word Spaniel was dropped by the AKC on Sept.
1, 1982, and became officially known only as “the Brittany”. Mr. Lucien Ufford, of Bellows
Falls, Vermont, was the first president of the CNEBC. He also had the distinction of having the first Dual
Champion Brittany in the United States, Britt of Bellows Falls. Britt earned his field
championship then his bench champ ionship at Westminster. Britt’s importance to the CNEBC was reflected
in the celebration of our 50th Anniversary when he was proudly displayed on our T-shirts. We are currently
celebrating our 60 plus years.
We are also proud to hold the distinction of having the first Brittany Specialty held in the East on August 20, 1960.

Our Charter
If you presently own a Brittany or are considering owning a Brittany, the CNEBC might be a perfect group in which to
learn and educate yourself to life with a hunting dog. Brittanys are very active happy
dogs. Their desire to hunt and their ability to run is exceptional. They are extremely intelligent and
so happy to please. But you have to be able to keep up with their active lifestyle. Being
involved with what CNEBC has to offer gives you the opportunity to participate in events of interest to
both you and your dog and gives you both an outlet for that energy. Over the many years, since the
club’s inception, the members so inspired by our first DC, Britt of Bellows Falls, have tried to
maintain the original goals and interest in promoting the Dual Dog. Champion in the show ring as well as
the field. To that end the club sponsors events that are in keeping with these goals.
We run two AKC Sanctioned Field Trials per year. One in the fall and one in the spring.
These trials help members earn points for Field Championships. Many members from other regional
clubs participate in these events. In the spring we run a two day AKC Sanctioned Hunting
Test open to all pointing breeds. Legs are earned for Junior thru Master Hunting Titles In August, on the third
Friday of the month, we have our annual AKC Sanctioned Independent Specialty Show and another show with an All Breed club
in our area during the year. Our events that draw entries from all over the Northeast and beyond.
Some of the finest Brittanys that the breed has to offer will be seen at our shows and field events.
The Club has a “Member’s Fun Day”, formally known as the “Standish” , where we run a
fun field competition, a general meeting for nomination of officers and a pot luck supper. This event is
held at the Swift River Sportsmen’s Club in Belchertown, MA on the first Sunday in December. Rotating
trophies are given for the days events at the Game Dinner.
